Like every year, smartphone users long for the launch of the new upgrades of iPhone models from Apple every fall. It is usually not until nearer to the actual launch date that we hear the official announcements from Apple, but like other events in the past, the iPhone 13 models are expected to be revealed this September 2021, so hold your horses if you are considering buying an iPhone as your next business mobile as there will be a new series of iPhone very soon. These next-gen iPhone models are expected to get a lot of upgrades including Apple’s first-ever 120Hz display, smaller notch, a super-fast 5G chip and ultra-wide 48MP camera. Based on all rumours and leaks, here’s everything we know about the iPhone 13 so far.

iPhone 13 release date

It is now official on Apple’s website that the Apple event will be on the 14th September at 6:00 PM BST, where new products like the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, Apple watch series 7 and AirPods 3 could be revealed. As everything is not certain apart from the event’s date, let’s just wait till the actual event for details about the new devices.

iPhone 13 models

Based on various rumours, it is highly likely that Apple will go with “iPhone 13” over “iPhone 12s” for the 2021 iPhone lineup, continuing with iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Here’s how the iPhone 13 models could be this year:

iPhone 13 mini – 5.4-inches

iPhone 13 – 6.1-inches

iPhone 13 Pro – 6.1-inches

iPhone 13 Pro Max – 6.7-inches

What’s new in the iPhone 13

Smaller notch

The bulky notch has been here since iPhone X and the size has been the same. For the new iPhone 13, we are expecting a smaller notch on all four models that would give the screen more space and a fresher look.

To be able to shrink the notch, Apple would need to combine the currently separated infrared flood illuminator, sensor and dot projector, which make up the iPhone 12’s Face ID unlocking system, into a single module. With two fewer sensors required and the earpiece moved into the top bezel, we should see a much narrower notch on the iPhone 13.

120hz ProMotion Display

In 2020, a variety of rumours before the launch of the iPhone 12 lineup suggested the high-end iPhone 12 models could feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, but later it became clear that this feature was delayed until 2021 possibly because of battery life concerns.

With Apple keeping the same display sizes as the iPhone 12, the company could make other changes to the phones’ screens. A report from ET News says that Apple will adopt a 120Hz refresh rate for the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max, with leaker Ice Universe also naming the iPhone 13 Pro Max as having 120Hz. This will allow for smoother scrolling as well as improved gameplay and video playback.

Hardware-boosted Cameras

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will possibly offer a new 6-element ultrawide lens. The current iPhone 12 Pro models support a 5-element ultrawide angle lens. The more elements in a lens, the better the image quality tends to be as a rule.

A leaked iPhone 13 Pro Max dummy unit shown off by Unbox Therapy features an iPhone with noticeably bigger lenses. That should let in more light to improve photos in low-light settings.

For iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, Apple could be rearranging the camera lenses into a diagonal layout that has a flash at the top right of the camera module and a microphone at the bottom left, with the Wide and Ultra-Wide lenses set diagonal to one another. This may be a change introduced to support the rumoured Sensor-Shift Stabilization feature, which is currently limited to the Pro models.

Larger Battery

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is said to have a 4352mAh battery, 18% up from 3687mAh in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, while the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro will feature a 3095mAh battery, up from 2815mAh in the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 mini is expected to include a 2406mAh battery, up from the 2227mAh battery in the iPhone 12 mini. With the help of the A15 chip, the performance of the phone is expected to consume 15-20% less power to overcome the impact of the high refresh rate display.
